Three weeks after earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, Paul started law school – and hasn’t looked back. Paul has successfully tried cases and handled appeals in several state and federal courts, including Michigan, Ohio, Missouri, Texas, and Colorado.
He has been admitted pro hac vice in many other states on behalf of insurers, corporations, and individuals in product liability, insurance coverage disputes, contract, and tort claims. Paul’s focus is in commercial property and energy insurance subrogation. He has been AV-rated by Martindale Hubbell since 2002.
Paul has been invited to be a speaker and author for various insurance industry organizations, including Lloyd’s of London, The National Association for Subrogation Professionals, Exchanging, Sterling Educational Services, Claims and Litigation Management, and The Property Loss Research Bureau. He addressed insurance and subrogation topics such as Subrogating Large Losses, ‘Best Practice’ Programs for Insurance Recovery, The Fundamentals of Insurance Law, Diamonds in the Rough: Subrogation Recovery in Unlikely Places, Technology in Large Loss Subrogation, and The Economic Loss Doctrine: a Three-Headed Monster.
Paul presently represents dozens of worldwide insurers in several litigated matters involving Fortune 1000 companies. He has handled, resolved and tried numerous cases, including:
- Tried an ammonia-fueled fire spread case in a food production facility; multi-million dollar jury verdict in favor of subrogated, foreign insurers against a local defendant in Ohio
- Nine-figure loss in Michigan that resulted in one of the top 3 Largest Settlements
- Nine-figure loss from a blast furnace in Michigan, settlement amount confidential, 2011
- Eight-figure loss in Louisiana from a failed part in a fertilizer processing facility, settlement amount confidential, 2013
- Eight-figure loss in Texas from a natural gas compression station explosion, settlement amount confidential, 2014
- Eight figure loss at animal processing facility due to overheating in Quebec, settlement amount confidential, 2014
- Mid-seven figure loss due to boiler failure at publicly-owned facility in Wisconsin, settlement amount confidential, 2015
- Greater than $5M loss due to arson fire at riverside warehouse in Georgia; successfully proved the fire suppression vendor violated its contract and the NFPA, settlement amount confidential, 2016
- Mid-seven figure loss due to improperly applied flooring materials in a public building, Wisconsin, settlement amount confidential, 2017
- Eight-figure loss at chemical processing facility in Louisiana due to a failed turbine, settlement amount confidential, 2017
- Eight-figure loss of a hydro turbine associated with the failure of a crane, settlement amount confidential, 2018.
The best part about these cases, Paul thinks, is that nearly everything about them is world-class: clients, experts, the legal issues, even opposing counsel. So, while he is grateful for the chance to have found a ‘sweet spot’ in the litigation field, that only barely makes up for the summer he lost going straight to law school.
